This wasn’t the first time I’d read about hypnotic dissociation to manipulate just one part of a person’s body. Stiff arm and floating arm inductions have long been common methods for inducing trance and demonstrating hypnotic suggestion. In the stiff arm induction, the hypnotist gets the subject to imagine their arm is a steel rod. It’s so stiff that they can’t bend their elbow. In the floating arm induction, the hypnotist has the subject imagine balloons tied to their arm. They picture the balloon lifting their arm, which causes the arm to rise over their heads. Both inductions create a dissociative state where the subject feels like the arm is moving (or not moving) on it’s own outside of the subject’s conscious control.
